The Judith Dawn Memorial Fund for the Arts, an Awakenings Foundation Award Program, was created to recognize and support sexual assault and abuse survivors who are interested in pursuing artistic endeavors as a continuation of the life-long healing process. A total of $5000 is available each funding year, which runs from July 1 to June 30.

My name is Venus Johnson and I am a sexual abuse survivor. I was molested at the ages of 8 and 10 by a family friend and a cousin. I am also a survivor of date rape that resulted in a pregnancy.

I would like to spread awareness of the signs to look for as a parent including but not limited to changes in behavior, childhood depression and self hatred. Although children show signs in many different ways I will like to teach them to actively look and pay attention to any changes.

Today, I’m married and a proud parent of a 21 year old college student. I want to help heal the wounds of this horrific attack and allow young boys and girls that they too can live a healthy prosperous life after the storm.

    Thank you for your time.

    Venus Johnson
